Drug Free Methods for Controlling Pain

Unfortunately, we all have to deal with physical pain sometimes. It may be chronic, from an ongoing condition like back pain or headaches. Or it might be acute pain, like with an injury, or after having a procedure or surgery.

Medication is one way to help manage pain, but it’s not the only way. After surgery or a procedure, your care team will give you pain medication but will also suggest other methods of pain relief.

For example, your care team may suggest something simple, like changing position, or using a cold pack, holding pressure over an incision, or doing something you enjoy, like listening to music, reading, or watching TV.

They may also suggest something more formal like deep breathing exercises or meditation.

Believe it or not, all of these methods have been shown to help people manage their pain. And most patients choose one or more of these methods, along with medication, as a part of their pain management plan.

If you have questions or concerns about pain management, make sure to talk to your care team as soon as possible.
