Is This Normal?

After your cardiac surgery, your body is going to feel a little different in the days and weeks after you get home. Some of these changes are a normal part of the healing process, but some may not be, so it’s important to know what to look out for and when you need to contact your care team.

Examples of common physical symptoms include tingling or numbness in fingers, elbows, or arms after surgery, muscle soreness, tightness in shoulders or lower back, a lump at the top of the incision, and constipation.

In addition to the common physical symptoms, there are other common issues that might interrupt your normal routine. These include lack of appetite, loss of taste, nausea, trouble sleeping, and mood swings.

You should remember that your body has been through a lot. You’ll have good days and bad days, but hang in there, and make sure you get support from your family and friends.

By working with your care team and giving yourself the time you need to heal, you can keep yourself on the road to recovery.
