GLP-1 Medicines

GLP-1 medicines are shots or injections that can help control your blood sugar and your weight. GLP-1s work in four ways to help lower your blood sugar levels by:

  • Slowing down how much your stomach empties after you eat
  • Helping your body make more insulin, if it can
  • Helping lower levels of glucagon
  • Making you feel less hungry

When you have type 2 diabetes, these can help to lower your blood sugar level and control your weight. You take GLP-1 medications by giving yourself a shot with a pen that holds the drug. For most of the pens, you’ll dial the dose you take before you take the shot. You can take your shot in your upper arm, belly, or thigh.

Talk with your doctor about how much and how often you should take this medication. Some side effects can include:

  • Mild stomach upset or diarrhea (only when you first start taking it)
  • Red or irritated skin
  • Stomach pain or vomiting
