All About High Blood Sugar

You shouldn’t expect your blood sugar to always be perfectly on target because sometimes biological reasons will cause your blood sugar to be higher or lower than you expect. However, it is very important that you’re able to tell when your blood sugar is too high (hyperglycemia). Some things that can cause high blood sugar are:

  • What you eat
  • How much you eat
  • Not enough diabetes medication
  • Not enough physical activity
  • Illness
  • Stress
  • Some types of medication

Symptoms of high blood sugar start slowly, usually over a couple of hours or a couple of days. Symptoms can include:

  • Feeling very thirsty
  • Dry mouth
  • Urinating frequently
  • Blurry vision

If you do have high blood sugar here are some tips to help you get it back under control:

  • Measure your blood sugar more often
  • Continue to take all of your diabetes medication
  • Drink plenty of fluids (sugar-free)

If your blood sugar levels do not come down, or if they continue to rise, call your care team.
