What to Eat
Every person with diabetes should meet with a registered dietician to make a personalized meal plan. The dietician can help you figure out how to incorporate carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into your diet to make a balanced meal plan that will work for you.
Here are some tips to help keep your blood sugar under control:
- Eat three meals a day.
- Don’t skip meals.
- Eat smaller portions.
- Don’t snack in between meals (unless your dietician says you should).
- Avoid foods with added sugar and fat.
- Drink sugar-free beverages (you can use sugar-free substitutes).
- Don’t add sugar to your food (you can use sugar substitutes).
Before you’re discharged from the hospital, be sure to ask your doctor for a referral to a dietician (most insurance plans will cover this).
