Durable Medical Equipment

After surgery, it may be difficult to get up and down from low seats and toilets until you‘ve regained mobility. You may need additional adaptive equipment to help with these and other activities such as bathing and dressing.

Special adaptive equipment is available from medical supply stores, pharmacies that sell medical equipment, and online retailers. This equipment includes walkers, crutches, bedside commodes, raised toilet seats, and shower benches or shower chairs. Some community organizations or churches loan or rent assistive equipment. You can also find low-cost, lightly used devices at your local thrift store.

You should also note that some insurance companies may not cover all types of equipment. Check with your orthopedic team or patient care coordinator before making a purchase.
