Preparing For Your Surgery

Leading up to the day of your surgery, you’ll need to prepare yourself, which will help reduce the risk of infection. We have special instructions on how you can do this to help the surgical team.

Don’t shave around the surgical site for up to five to seven days before the surgery. Nicks from the razor may introduce bacteria to your body. Wash your body with the antibacterial soap or wipes that have been recommended by your surgeon to help kill any bacteria that’s on your skin.

Wear clean nightclothes, and sleep on freshly laundered linens. This helps prevent bacteria that would cause infection after the surgery. Don’t use any perfumes, lotion, oil, powder, or deodorant on the night before and day of surgery. They may cause infections or issues with the monitoring equipment. Do not eat or drink after midnight. That means no food, drinks, or liquids. This includes gum, candy, mints, and water.

Following these directions will help reduce the likelihood of infection during your surgery. If you have any questions, talk with your doctor.
