Patient Fall Prevention

Did you know that every year in the United States, hundreds of thousands of people fall in the hospital? Up to half of these patients who fall will add an injury that may lengthen their hospital stay and their ability to return home independently. Being a patient in the hospital actually increases your likelihood of falling, so your nurses always will be assessing your risk for falling. Anyone, at any age or physical ability, can fall at any time. Your illness, symptoms, medications, and the unfamiliarity of the hospital can all increase your risk of falling.

The call bell will be kept next to your bed. It one of the most important pieces of safety equipment in your room. It helps you stay in contact with your care team so they can make sure you stay safe throughout your stay with us. It should be used if you need help getting out of bed, going to the bathroom, or getting something that is out of your reach. No request is too small for your care team, so, please don’t hesitate to use the call bell for assistance.

You are the most important member of your care team, and you play an especially important part in fall prevention. At MedStar Health, we strive to deliver the best care to every patient every day. If you have any questions about fall prevention, please ask a member of your care team. You are our first priority.
