Rehab Devices

Your healthcare team may use different pieces of equipment to help with your recovery after surgery. These pieces of equipment will help prevent complications or other challenges.

Compression stockings are very tight socks that gently squeeze to support blood flow, which prevents swelling and blood clots.

Sequential compression devices, also known as SCDs, are long plastic socks that wrap around your lower legs. The socks are hooked up to a machine that pumps air in and out of the socks. This forces blood to keep moving in your legs and prevents it from pooling and forming clots.

Heel protectors are pieces of foam that wrap around your feet like sandals to relieve pressure from your heels and prevent bedsores.

Ice packs may be used to help bring the swelling down.

An abduction pillow is a triangular foam pillow that may be used when you’re in bed after a total hip replacement. It helps prevent movement, while you sleep, that may cause pain or damage to the hip. It connects to your thighs and sometimes your calves with soft straps.

An incentive spirometer is a device that helps you take deep breaths after surgery in order to open up your lungs and decrease your risk of developing pneumonia.

The equipment shown may not be exactly what’s used at your hospital. If you are unsure or unclear about the equipment, talk with your care team.
