Sleep Medicine

If you have trouble sleeping after your surgery or if you are taking medication that makes it hard to sleep, your doctor may give you medication to help you sleep. Rest and sleep after surgery is a very important part of your recovery, so if you aren’t getting good sleep, it’s OK to talk to your doctor about sleep medication.

If you take this medication, the common side effects are drowsiness or dizziness during the daytime. You should call your doctor if you continue to be drowsy during the day or if you still have trouble sleeping after taking sleep medication.

Three helpful tips when you take sleep medication are:

  • Don’t take it with alcohol.
  • Take it right before you go to bed.
  • Only use it for short-term sleeping problems, not long-term help.

If you have any questions about your sleep medication or questions about how you can sleep better in the long run, please talk to your care team.
